In June’s news, we see a plethora of security related stories related to Covid-19, including information on staying secure and avoiding recent targeted phishing scams.  

Additionally, we look at critical updates for both Windows and SQL Server, and the changes Microsoft has made regarding Cumulative Updates for SQL Server in response to the ongoing pandemic.

SQL Server Updates:

Microsoft released its latest cumulative update (13) for SQL Server 2016 SP2 on the 28th May. Details can be found here.

Microsoft’s Covid-19 Update to Cumulative Updates:

Back in April; Microsoft announced that in response to Covid-19 that beginning in May they would be delaying the release date for all mainstream supported SQL Server Cumulative Updates by one month. This meant that there were scheduled Cumulative Updates scheduled by Microsoft in May that that have been pushed back.

Current upcoming cumulative updates scheduled include:
  • (June 16) SQL Server 2019 CU5
  • (June 16) SQL Server 2016 SP2 CU13
  • (July 21) SQL Server 2017 CU21
